Welcome!
Welcome to the church and former abbey of Pontigny.
Whether you choose to follow a signposted route or to wander around on your own, you will find here everything you need to better understand this unique place.
We are about to enter the largest surviving Cistercian abbey church, where the monks welcomed novices and saints, beggars and monarchs.
Before entering, let's take a look at the exterior, because in the Middle Ages, what is inside is first seen outside.
For the continuation of your visit:
The quotation
"[At the monastery]
all guests who arrive
will be received like Christ,
for he will one day say:
"I have been your guest
and you have received me."
All will be granted the respect
that is their due,
especially brothers in the faith
and pilgrims (...)
It is above all when receiving the poor
and the pilgrims that special care
will be needed because,
in them more than in others,
we receive Christ.
For the rich
the fear they inspire is enough
to honour them."
Rule of Saint Benedict (6th century)
Rule of Saint Benedict, ch. 53, 1-2 and 15.
